Why is CPCU being updated?
CPCU is being updated to reflect the changing nature of risk management and insurance and to ensure that students:
- Gain a holistic view of the insurance business value chain
- Develop cross-functional leadership skills
- Can effectively provide solutions to business challenges across your organization
-
Are the requirements for completing CPCU changing?
CPCU will continue to require 8 courses and 8 exams.
The updated CPCU designation completion path will include:
- 5 core courses to account for a new course on data and analytics
- 2 courses in either personal or commercial lines (the Personal Lines and Commercial Lines Survey courses numbered 553 and 557 are set to retire)
- 1 elective (all elective options will remain the same)
- Ethics and matriculation
Students who have completed courses under the current pathway will continue to have credit for those courses. Based on cross-credits being provided, no student will need to take an additional or extra course.
-
Are the course numbers and titles changing?
Course numbers and topics will remain the same, while course titles will be updated. The new data and analytics course will be CPCU 550.
-
When will the updated CPCU courses and CPCU 550 be available for purchase?
They will be available for purchase on the CPCU designation page and within the Progress Tracker in July.
-
What is being updated within the courses?
While the course topics will remain the same, the content of the courses is being updated to reflect the evolving risk management and insurance business so that learners can develop the skills necessary to be successful today and into the future.
Additionally, the learning experience is being updated to match the needs of today’s busy adult learner—including more videos and interactions to help students acquire and retain the skills they need to be leaders.
-
Are CPCU electives changing?
No, electives are not changing in the updated program.
-
Are there changes to the ARM path to CPCU?
Yes. Students taking CPCU 410 will have until December 15, 2023 to take their exam before the course is retired. After that, the new ARM path to CPCU will continue to include all 3 ARM courses plus the updated CPCU 530, CPCU 540, 2 CPCU commercial lines or personal lines courses, an elective, and ethics. Please note that CPCU 410 will provide credit for CPCU 530 in the new ARM to CPCU path.
-
What dates do students in current CPCU courses need to be aware of?
Students in expiring courses (CPCU 500, 520, 530, 540, 551, 552, 555, 556) must test on their materials by September 15, 2023. If a course is expiring, it means that the course number is staying the same, but the course title and content have been updated.
Students in retiring courses (CPCU 410, 553, 557) must test on their materials by December 15, 2023. If a course is retiring, it means that the course is no longer part of the updated program.
Students in expiring and retiring courses have received a notice of their testing deadline. Completing current CPCU courses will provide credits toward the updated designation.
-
What course materials will be available?
The Recommended Course Package will continue to include the online course, a printed coursebook, a printable study outline, as well as assignment quizzes, practice exams, a simulated credentialing exam, flash cards, and discussion boards.
The Online Only package does not contain the printed coursebook.
-
Is pricing changing?
No, all CPCU course and exam prices will remain the same.
-
Will you be providing instructor guides for the new changes for those who teach CPCU?
There will be updated Course Outlines for CPCU in the Instructor Resource Center after Q2.
-
If students do not pass their exam by the expiration date, will they receive a refund/credit toward a new exam?
If students do not pass their exam by the deadline, they will not be provided credit for a different Institutes course or exam.
-
Can a student use the existing course materials they already have to prepare for and pass the updated exam?
No, the exams for the newer course versions have been intentionally developed to reflect the updated content in the new courses. We do not recommend using expiring courses for new exams.
-
Is there any change to the test format?
As of now, there will be no change to the testing format.
-
Should students planning to register for the July-September exam window wait for the updated courses?
No, students do not need to wait for the updated content to continue in their current pathway to earning CPCU. Credits will be provided in the new pathway for current courses that are completed.
How Updates Will Impact Current Student Progress
We’ve received a number of questions from students regarding their individual circumstances. We’ve added a few of the most frequently asked questions below. Due to varying student waivers, credits, and completion path options, the below scenarios are not exact, but can hopefully serve as a guide for how course credit will generally be handled. Once the program is updated in July, students’ Progress Trackers will show their individual recommended pathway based on the courses they’ve completed.
-
If I complete CPCU 553 or 557 before or on December 15th and have 2 out of 3 courses on the personal or commercial track completed, and have some or most of my CPCU core courses complete, will I still need to take CPCU 550?
If you complete CPCU 553 or 557 before the 12/15 deadline, you will likely be able to complete the program using the current pathway you are on. If you are not able to complete CPCU 553 or 557 by then, you would likely need to complete CPCU 550. Either way, you are still completing the same number of courses and exams in total (8) to earn the designation. Once updated in July, students can refer to the Progress Tracker for their individual, recommended path forward.
-
If I have completed one or more of my CPCU core courses by the September deadline, but have no courses complete in the personal or commercial lines track, will I need to take CPCU 550?
Yes, you would likely need to take CPCU 550. Either way, you are still completing the same number of courses and exams in total (8) to earn the designation, as you likely will not need to complete CPCU 553 or 557. Once updated in July, students can refer to the Progress Tracker for their individual, recommended path forward.
-
If I complete all exams for the CPCU path or ARM to CPCU path by 12/15, but haven’t yet met the 2 years of experience for matriculation, what will occur? Will I need to take additional courses after that or will I be satisfied when the 2 years is met?
Matriculation will continue to be a requirement in the new path, so if you have completed all coursework and exams, you will earn your designation once you complete your 2-year experience requirement, just as you would under the current pathway.
-
Can I transfer my expiring exam?
While you can transfer your expiring exam, please note that starting October 15, 2023, exams will cover the new CPCU content, and we do not recommend taking the new exam after studying expired materials.
CPCU Credit From Other Institutes and Non-Institutes Programs
-
Will completed AIDA designation courses provide credit towards the new CPCU 550 data course?
Associate in Insurance Data Analytics (AIDA®) designation courses will not waive the new course, CPCU 550: Maximizing Value with Data and Technology. Students who have earned their AIDA will still need to complete CPCU 550 if earning CPCU. Additionally, CPCU 550 will not waive any courses within AIDA.
Since AIDA 181 is a required course for completing the AIDA designation, students who have their AIDA would have credit to the CPCU elective component, which includes AIDA 181 as an option.
-
If CPCU 553 or 557 is currently waived for a student due to having AINS, will the waiver still be accepted?
Yes, students who were grandfathered into this credit will still maintain this waiver in the new program. Please note as well that CPCU 553 and 557 are retiring on December 15th, 2023.
-
Are any waivers available for CPCU 550 (e.g., CAS DISC Introduction to Data Analytics, iCAS Data Concepts and Visualization, a Master's degree in Statistics, etc.)?
No, there are no current waivers available for CPCU 550.
-
Does a student’s API designation still waive a CPCU personal lines course?
Yes, if a student has completed the API designation, they will continue to have credit toward a personal lines course in CPCU.
-
Will having an MBA still waive CPCU 540?
External waivers are not changing, so yes, an MBA still waives CPCU 540 in the new pathway.
